A concerned KildareNow reader has emailed us after she came across a large pile of litter which was illegally dumped at the Curragh over the weekend.

She said: "I found another pile of rubbish bigger this time, and maybe you could on this occasion ask people to be careful when choosing who they are hiring to collect their garbage or they might end up illegally dumped on the Curragh."placeholder image

Earlier this week there were more scenes of fly tipping on the Curragh with another local coming across a huge mound of illegally dumped household items on what is supposed to be a State protected area.

Some of the dumped goods included a large leather couch, a bicycle, old paint cans, tyres, a walking aid and a number of electrical items.placeholder image

Fines of up to €3,000 can be handed out to those who are caught dumping illegally, but it is estimated that around 60 tonnes of waste is dumped in Ireland every day.

According to an RTE report earlier this year, Kildare is the seventh best county in Ireland at clamping down on illegal dumping.
