Some plan to use Christmas party to push for promotion

Research by leading office suppliers Viking has revealed that one in 10 Irish employees plan on using the company Christmas party as an opportunity to speak to management about a promotion. This is compared to 90% of respondents stating that they felt it would be an inappropriate time to do so.
When it comes to what happens at the office Christmas do, 39% of those surveyed admitted to getting tipsy on the night while 21% admitted to speaking inappropriately to a colleague or boss. 17% have gotten into the party mood and danced on tables, while over a fifth of respondents had nothing to reveal stating that they are always on their best behaviour.
There may be some embarrassing anecdotes to share the following day, with 79% of respondents to the Viking survey engaging in gossip the following day at the office - 42% say they find it harmless and laugh it off compared to 29% who can feel quite embarrassed and even slightly hurt by it.
“The traditional Christmas party is back on for most companies following years of cut backs and it seems it’s where many find the courage to approach management on career progression too. Whilst the relaxed atmosphere gives employees the opportunity to speak with their boss, we would advise remaining professional and arranging a meeting during office hours to discuss promotion opportunities. Enjoy the Christmas party for what it is – a social event and a chance to relax and enjoy yourself.” says Michael Walby, Director of Viking in Ireland.
