From winning the Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship to leading the GAA, Liam O'Neill left a lasting legacy

Trumera GAA Club has paid a heartfelt tribute to one of the club's greatest and most influential members, former GAA President Liam O'Neill, following his passing.

The 70-year-old Laois native enjoyed a lifetime of service to Gaelic games at club, county, provincial and national level, with his election as Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael in 2012 representing an extraordinary achievement for a member of one of the smallest clubs in the country.

In a statement to the Leinster Express/Laois Live, Trumera GAA described Liam as an "integral part" of the club throughout his life, highlighting his contribution as both a player and administrator.

"Liam was an integral part of our club throughout his life. His contributions as a player and later as an administrator were immense and he was present from the foundation of our club, an integral part of all our greatest achievements and a loyal supporter for all of his life. Liam served in every administrative position in the club and his dedication was unwavering," the club said.

One of Liam's proudest moments with Trumera came in 2004 when, as club chairman, he oversaw one of the greatest achievements in the club's history as they won the Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship and secured promotion to Senior level for the first time. That success was made even more special as his son Ciarán was a member of the championship-winning team.

Liam's contribution to Gaelic games extended far beyond his home club, with the Trumera man also playing a hugely influential role with CLG Laois. He served as Laois GAA Secretary, where he was instrumental in improving the county's finances and fixtures, while also overseeing the redevelopment of O'Moore Park. He later became Chairman of the Leinster Council, another landmark achievement for both himself and his club.

Trumera GAA said one of its proudest days came when Liam was elected GAA President, a position he held from 2012 until 2015.

"Liam was a progressive and inclusive President and many of his initiatives laid the foundations for the modernisation of the GAA," the club added.

"It was a truly remarkable achievement for someone from one of the smallest clubs in the country to rise through the organisation to eventually hold the highest position in the GAA in Ireland."

Away from administration, Liam also made a significant impact through education as principal of Gaelscoil Thromaire, where he taught generations of club members and helped develop a strong link between the school and the GAA club.

Trumera GAA extended its condolences to Liam's wife Áine, daughters Caoimhe and Cliodhna, son Ciarán, the extended O'Neill family and his wide circle of friends.

"Liam's passing leaves a huge void in our club and community but his legacy will endure for generations," the club said.

"Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."
