The woman appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court

A woman appeared in court accused of attempting to smuggle drugs into Portlaoise Prison.

Kadie McCarthy (20) of Churchwell Gardens, Belmayne, Coolock, Dublin 15, is accused of possessing drugs for sale or supply and bringing drugs into Portlaoise Prison, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, on January 15 last.

Garda Kevin Purcell said the woman made no reply when charged and there was no objection to bail.

The woman said her solicitor was “on strike” and she was currently on maternity leave.

Solicitor Aonghus McCarthy said he was willing to “stand in” for the solicitor.

Judge Andrew Gubbins said he would grant legal aid to the woman’s solicitor who wasn’t present. He asked about directions in the case.

Garda Purcell said the case was to be dealt with in the district court.

However, the court was told it was allegedly €7,900 of drugs. Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said “I would just like to see a letter from the DPP. I think it is a bit high…we can’t give a local direction at that level.” He asked Judge Gubbins to adjourn the case.

Judge Gubbins adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on November 16.
