Amber mental health award for Laois primary school

A Laois Church of Ireland primary school has been awarded their first Amber Flag for efforts to boost positive mental health among the children and staff.
Abbeyleix South National School proudly hoisted their first Amber Flag in a special day shared with families on Tuesday, June 18.
The school praised the fantastic achievements and efforts of Mrs Mythen, Amber Flag coordinator, the Amber Flag
Team and their whole school community for embracing the year long project.

"The Amber Flag is an initiative which recognises the individual efforts of schools to create safe, healthy, positive and inclusive environments that support mental health and well-being.
"Our hope is that by developing an environment of openness and support, our pupils will be encouraged to talk, share and initiated discussions about mental health. So that it becomes part of everyday conversations in the school environment.
"Our Amber Flag team throughout the year has shown tremendous commitment to the promotion of positive mental health by encouraging teamwork and contributions from their peers. So today at this celebration, I am saying ‘Well done’ to each and every pupil and staff member in our school, you helped to make this flag a success.’ the coordinator said.
The flag was raised by two Sixth Class Pupils from the Amber Flag Team. Following the ceremony the pupils, parents and staff all enjoyed a treat from the visiting ice cream van.
The Amber Flag initiative, overseen by the Pieta mental health charity, celebrates communities that create healthy, supportive, and inclusive environments by promoting mental well-being. The initiative is open to primary and secondary schools, Youthreach, third-level, further education and training centres, clubs and other organisations.
