Buses and trucks 'bumping up and down' on defective Laois road

A Laois road with "defects" has lorries and buses "bumping up and down" and must be repaired urgently says a councillor.
Laois County Council has been asked to repair the N78 road at Ballycoman and Ballylehene Lower, as it enters Ballylinan.
Cllr Padraig Fleming says commercial drivers alerted him to the issue on what is a 1.5km stretch of road.
"Bus drivers and truck drivers have raised it with me a while back. They are bumping up and down on the road in a few particular spots," he said.
He tabled a motion to the March meeting of the Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District, asking Laois County Council to repair the road "in the interests of health and safety as there are defects on the centre line of the road and road edges".
The council said they will do repairs on the road section. They also plan to examine the road with a view to including it in a future structural upgrade, which would need to be funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
Cllr Fleming warned that "these kind of temporary repairs don't last".
"I hope these will be fairly sturdy repairs. You need a full strengthening of the road. I'll be pushing hard if this goes into next year," he said.
Cllr Ben Brennan said it is "definitely dangerous".
"I can't understand how one section is decaying the whole time. It pulls you off the road if you are going fairly steady. What's going wrong?" he said.
