Busy Laois road in Portlaoise set for closure for works

Summer traffic disruption in store as cycle lanes and footpaths are being installed
One of the busiest roads in Portlaoise is set to partially close through the summer for cycle lanes and footpath works.
Laois County Council has served notice that it intends to temporarily close a section of the R445 Mountrath Road in Portlaoise.
The local authority says the road will be shut eastbound only, from the roundabout at its intersection with Rockdale estate to a point 400m east on the R445 where it intersects with the roundabout junction of the R941 Western Orbital Road.
As for the projected timescale, County Hall's Roads Section says the partial closure will impact between June 4 to September 2.
The Council says the westbound lane (Mountrath direction) will remain open to traffic for this period.
It adds that the road closure is necessary to facilitate footpath and cycle track works.
A notice said diversions would be signposted and a map indicating the routes to be closed and the alternative routes will be available for inspection at www.laois.ie and Áras an Chontae, Portlaoise.
Anyone who wishes to object to the proposed road closure should do so by email to [email protected] or in writing to the Administrative Officer, Roads Section, Laois County Council in Portlaoise no later than 4pm on Thursday, May 9.
It will be the second summer running that one of the main routes into town has been impacted by road works. The N77 Abbeyleix Road and the N80 Mountmellick Road in the town were both closed during the summer of 2023 for road works.
