Call to evict Laois council tenants installing mobile homes

A Laois councillor wants tenants who bring in mobile homes to be evicted.

Mobile homes that are installed in Laois council house gardens are "taken very seriously".

The Laois County Council Director of Services for Housing has confirmed that parking any mobile home needs planning permission, but doing so in a council house is breaking tenancy rules.

Angela McEvoy has addressed a query over Laois County Council tenants who park the large caravans in their gardens.

"There is a tenancy agreement in council homes. If people bring them in we have to go through that process. There are rules on what you can and cannot do. If you put in a mobile home it needs planning if it is for domestic purposes," she said.

The claim was made by Cllr Aisling Moran who said that some tenants are bringing in mobile homes.

"We have this thing where people who got houses moved in mobile homes and moved other people into them," she said.

She suggests that they should be punished by being evicted and taken off the housing list.

"Will they be taken off the list and moved out? There doesn't seem to be any punishment as such. They are taking houses off other people," Cllr Moran said.

"I can't comment, but our estate management take it very seriously," the Director replied.
