Mountrath Community School took part in their third annual 'Think Languages Day'

Transition Year students from Mountrath Community School took part in their third annual 'Think Languages Day', on Friday, November 22.

This event was organised by Languages Connect to promote the learning of a foreign language. Now in Ireland, language skills are more important than ever to keep us connected to new and exciting global opportunities.

The aim of Languages Connect is to build awareness of the many advantages of having foreign language skills, and to make foreign language learning more appealing to everyone, while also educating the wider public.

During the week, six transition year students were teamed up, and went around delivering badges, word games, pens, and stickers to the junior classes, in aid to encourage more to get involved, while also building the excitement in the lead-up to Friday.

On Friday, all students in fourth year took part in the nationwide initiative.

The day began with an exciting and energy-filled opening ceremony, which was then followed by a fun online quiz all about languages where the Mountrath students competed fiercely against an array of schools across the country.

A big congratulations are in order for Amelie, Emma, Katie, and Daniel who succeeded in securing a place on the leader-board.

A ‘Just Dance’ competition also took place, along with an Irish Sign Language workshop where they all signed popular Christmas songs in a heart-warming event.

The eventful day was finished off with a fascinating Chinese calligraphy workshop, which gave an insight into part of a culture they have never experienced previously.

The day was packed with fun, learning, and cultural appreciation.

This year, Languages Connect saw the most participants to date, with over 17,500 students across 200 schools celebrating the importance of language and culture.
