New Portlaoise bus service adding to problem says councillor

Laois County Council has been asked to review the road and parking layout of a busy residential street in Portlaoise town centre.

The street is at the start of the Borris Road near the junction at the Dublin road. It is lined with older houses with small front gardens but no driveways.

Cllr Paddy Buggy tabled a motion to the March meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, saying that the new Portlaoise bus service, launched in February, has made matters worse.

The Laois councillor is asking for the council to examine the section of the Borris Road from the entrance to St John's Square to the entrance to St Mary's Hall.

Cllr Buggy says the council needs to improve the parking arrangement there for residents, and also the "road width, two way traffic and the new bus service".

"It's a bottleneck. Those houses were built before the huge development out the Borris Road.

"Residents find it very difficult to park, some of them are elderly," he said.

In reply, Laois County Council's road design staff say they will undertake a review of the section of road, "both in the context of the request, and any future proposals under the Local Transportation Plan for Portlaoise".
