The money was donated to Jack and Jill

A woman who thought she had found €250 outside a chemist in Laois was told in court that gardaí only had two fifties.

Joan Croke had made a police property application at a sitting of Portlaoise District Court in relation to €250 in cash.

However, when the matter was called Sgt Jason Hughes asked for some time to clarify the sum of money. The cash had been discovered outside Chemco Chemist in Lyster Square, Portlaoise.

When the case was recalled, Ms Croke said “my recollection is that I handed in five 50s.”

Sgt Hughes explained that “in the exhibit bag it is two 50s.”

“There is only two in there now,” Judge Andrew Cody told the woman. He asked her what she wanted to do with the money.

“I would like you to give them to the Jack and Jill charity,” she said.

Judge Cody described Jack and Jill as a superb charity who do great work as he commended the woman for her “honesty and integrity”.

“Thank you very much for handing it in,” he said.
