“Crazy” public lighting situation in Laois

Councillors were unhappy about delays in getting lights working
A school warning sign has been out of action for almost two years, a councillor told a recent meeting.
Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy asked in a motion: “That this Council repair the school warning sign approaching the school from the Stradbally Road, Timahoe and also the speed indicator on the Portlaoise Road, Stradbally.”
He told a meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District that the sign in Timahoe had been “out for the guts of two years” and said, “it has become a bit of a joke.”
He said the speed sign on the Portlaoise Road in Stradbally hasn’t worked since before Christmas.
He said there was a major problem with the public lighting situation in the county which he branded as “crazy”.
Independent Cllr Ben Brennan agreed and said a pedestrian crossing was installed two years ago but lights were never switched on.
Fine Gael Cllr Vivienne Phelan agreed and said the situation was very frustrating. She said people hear that the property tax has increased and are asking where are the services in return. “It is very urgent at this stage,” she remarked.
In a written response to Cllr McEvoy’s motion, Executive Engineer Conor Delaney, said: “Road Design will liaise with the Maintenance Contractor and get the required repairs carried out.”
