Mountmellick to Clonaslee traffic must be slowed insists local election candidate

It’s only a matter of time before there somebody dies on a busy Laois road according to local election candidate who has highlighted a heightened risk at a soccer club.

The Labour Party’s, Bryan Corrigan made the claim after visiting sections of the R442 Mountmellick to Clonaslee road. he was left in no doubt that vehicles are over speeding on sections of this stretch of road

"It’s only a matter of time before there is another fatality," he claimed.

The Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District candidate issued a statement after he said he talked to many residents while out canvassing. He said that parts of the road are particularly hazardous.

"One being outside the Rosenallis Soccer Club where by parking is insufficient and those availing of the amenity are entering and exciting the facility gates which are too close to the main road for safety. MORE BELOW PICTURE.placeholder image

"Another stretch of the road just outside Mountmellick at Garroon where there are no public footpaths for the many existing houses that align with the road, school children are effectively using the main road to walk to school or to meet their friends who are in a similar situation.

"There are also many dangerous bends on the road at present and there are major concerns from residents who live on the road when they are entering and leaving their home as there are many blind spots that make visibility poor when trying to exit their property," he said.

Mr Corrigan call for action.

“Traffic controls should not include ramps and that a more intuitive solution would be required, perhaps road widening and islanding with sufficient warning for motorists would work,” he said.

Mr Corrigan said that the speed limit on this road is set to 80kph and should be reduced in the areas mentioned. He also noted that if it cannot be reduced then an additional Garda presence is required.

He said the many people who use this road daily deserve to be safe.

"As of 10th May there have been 73 traffic fatalities this year, an increase of 30% on 2023, the worst total in nearly a decade, and each death is a tragedy for their families and loved ones. roads, paths and cycleways across the country are in an appalling condition with changing weather patterns due to climate change resulting in more severe storms and heavier rain leaving unprecedented damage to roads and pathways behind,” he said.

He concluded that local government should be doing more to ensure public safety on this stretch of regional road.
