Four Laois schools meet to battle their robots

Laois schoolchildren who created moving robots came together this week to meet and compete.
Four primary schools took part in the STEM Vex Robotics Competition organised by Laois County Council.

All four schools had received their robot kits and games in February and in a few short months had built their robots to play the game. As part of the program, they also learned and practiced computer coding.
Scoil Eoin Phoil II hosted the event on Monday, April 24. with over 80 students among the teams playing six games and individual challenges. There was also a Coding exhibition on the day.

Next up for these students is the All Ireland Finals in the ATU Campus Castlebar on Thursday June 1.
The program is being rolled out by Antoinette Brennan, Broadband Officer Laois County Council in association with the Department of Rural and Community Development.
"The excitement is building in all schools now for this event and the students are very proud to be representing their schools and county.
"It was the first time that VEX Robotics was offered to schools in Laois. It is hoped with the availability of funding and sponsorship this program will be rolled out to many more schools in September with the overall goal to have this program in all primary and secondary schools in Laois," Ms Brennan said.
