A crime preventing property marking machine is hoped to be in use in Laois this winter.

Independent Councillor James Kelly asked when a property marking machine might be available in Laois.

“We had agreed that we would purchase a property marking machine for equipment. We all need an update on that because of burglaries and what’s happening in farmyards,” he said at a recent meeting.

Garda Sergeant Graham Kavanagh said he was aware that an application for funding had been made by the Public Participation Network(PPN).

“We are just awaiting sanction for that,” he said.

Sgt Kavanagh said a machine is in operation in Offaly being used by community groups. He explained that there is some training needed in the use of the machine.

“We are hoping that maybe over the winter we will get a bit of good news and we will be able to get out into the communities and start marking property,” he said.

Cllr Kelly welcomed the response and said the machine would be a great addition to the battle against burglary.

The issue was raised at the latest meeting of the Laois Joint Policing Committee meeting.
