An accusation of attempted robbery and assault near Portlaoise hospital could be struck out if directions aren’t obtained from the Director of Public Prosecutions in six weeks.

Dean Gray, 35, of No Fixed Abode, Ballymun, Dublin is accused of assault causing harm and attempted robbery on the Dublin Road in Portlaoise on February 16, 2023. He is further charged with trespass on the Dublin Road in Portlaoise on February 17.

Defence Solicitor Philip Meagher said while the allegation is “quite serious” he didn’t believe the investigation should have taken so long.

“There is an allegation of robbery, assault and trespass,” explained Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby.

Mr Meagher said the incidents are alleged to have occurred over a short window of time.

Sgt Kirby said there were “multiple locations” and a medical report was required in the investigation.

“I am looking for as long as possible,” he told Judge Andrew Cody at Portlaoise District Court.

Mr Meagher said his client would agree to a four week remand and he asked that the case be marked peremptory against the State.

Sgt Kirby asked for more time and described it as a “pretty complex” investigation.

Judge Andrew Cody adjourned the matter until May 18 and said he would allow one further remand after that date.

“I am effectively giving six weeks or else there is a strike out,” he said.

The matter will come before Portlaoise District Court again on May 18.
