Expressions of interest sought to manage hub and provide a community and social  enterprise space

The development of Market Square in Portarlington for the community has taken a step further with expressions of interest now being taken for those interested in managing and operating a new tourist information hub from the facility.

Laois County Council is looking for groups/bodies to apply to manage the hub and provide a Community / Social  Enterprise space which would provide a tourist information point for the people of Portarlington  and its hinterland. In line with the original use as a market house the facility will be a connection to nearby attractions and be a start and finish point for town tours, walks etc.

Providing information on the background to the project a spokesperson for the Council said: "The development of the Market House is one of the principal projects within the Portarlington  Regeneration Strategy 2030, a heritage-led regeneration strategy which recognises the Market  House as the heritage asset of Portarlington’s historical centre catalysing the enhancement of its wider area. This is to be achieved by stimulating physical, environmental, economic, and

community-related aspects of the town centre.

"The main objective of the project is 'to create a more viable and visually attractive Town Centre in Portarlington for residents, visitors and workers through the appropriate rehabilitation of the  Market House and other buildings and improvements to connectivity, public realm and amenities'. Underpinning this objective is the desire to regenerate the town centre by tackling

critical issues such as poor pedestrian environment, dereliction and dysfunctional public spaces. This overall vision also includes increasing the attractiveness of the area to encourage investment.

"The Community and Tourist Information Hub  will play a part in the overall visitor experience for Portarlington."

The council was granted funding of €1.2 million in 2021 by the Department of Rural Affairs and Community Development for the project which includes the surrounds in the square. It is hoped the building can once again become a focal point for the town and be used for meetings and exhibitions. As the building is a protected structure, no building works or other alterations are permitted without the permission of the Planning Authority.

The successful applicant will have the responsibility for the management and operation of the building and marketing it for community use and events.

It is envisaged that rooms on the ground floor and 1st floor will be available for Community use, an exhibition area will also be available to showcase Portarlington’s rich industrial heritage to include the “Ronnie Mathews” collection amongst other collections.

The closing date for receipt of Expressions of Interest is Tuesday, April 29 at 5pm.
