Headbutted Garda at Portlaoise Train Station

Man appeared before Portlaoise District Court
A man who headbutted a garda sergeant at Portlaoise Train Station was given time to gather compensation.
Sam Garvey, 25, of 156 The Park, Sallins Road, Naas, Kildare appeared before Portlaoise District Court accused of intoxication, threatening and abusive behaviour and assault on March 4, 2022.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said Garda Sergeant Niall Quinn, who is now serving in Limerick, suffered some discomfort after the incident.
“He received a headbutt to the forehead,” Sgt Kirby told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court.
He said the public order incident was linked as the man was intoxicated and refused to leave the station. He said the defendant has two previous convictions for public order offences.
Judge Andrew Cody noted the man was working in a drug treatment centre.
“I am a facilitator, I hold my own meetings,” the defendant explained.
Judge Cody noted the probation report was very positive but he also stressed the seriousness of an assault on a garda.
Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said compensation had been mentioned at a previous hearing.
“If he was given time to put his best foot forward he would certainly be in a position,” he said.
Judge Cody said the report was very positive.
“I would be happy to strike out both the public order, he has done very well,” said Judge Cody.
“Headbutting a garda would take a bit more,” he said.
He adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on April 4 “for payment of €500 to Garda Quinn or a charity of his nomination”. Judge Cody said he would strike out the charges if this was done.
