HSE to buy and convert house into doctors' quarters

The HSE is investing in the overhaul of B&B in Portlaoise so that it can be used for doctors in the town's hospital while they are on call.

The HSE has invited companies to bid for the contract to refurbish the existing Laois County Lodge B&B located at 26 A Dublin Road.

The property is located just across the road from the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise. The HSE says in its advertised tender documents that the building's refurbishment will consist of proposed new internal layouts, new external plant room, together with all associated site works.

Drawings provided to interested parties show that the health authority wants to provide nine bedrooms in the two-storey house. A garden will also be converted into a parking space for three cars.

The project was flagged in the Health Service Executive’s Capital Plan for 2025 which earmarked €17.72 million for health infrastructure in Laois.

The Leinster Express / Laois Live reported earlier in 2024 that said tender approval was given for the purchase and refurbishment of a property beside the hospital for on-call accommodation costing €300,000.

Nearing completion is the new two-storey wing at Portlaoise hospital for emergency care and the treatment of children.  A total of €5.7 million is going to the project in 2025.

Fire safety improvement works and emergency lighting system upgrades at Portlaoise hospital were slated for €800k spend.

Money was allocated to prepare a submission to increase beds in the hospital under the Acute Inpatient Bed Capacity Expansion Plan 2024-2031. The HSE is spending €200k on this project.

A tender was also approved for anti-ligature works at Portlaoise hospital's Acute Mental Health Unit costing €750k.
