A Councillor warned council planners that more green spaces should be provided with new developments.

Fine Gael Cllr Willie Aird said the council would come to regret not leaving an area large enough for children to play football.

He was speaking about Dunamaise View on the Dublin Road in Portlaoise during a meeting of Laois County Council.

Cllr Aird commended the estate but asked the council to take a second look at the development.

“It is tight for space up there,” said Cllr Aird.

“I certainly think going forward if we just could improve the layout,” he remarked.

Director of Service Angela McEvoy said the council seeks an allocation of 10% of the development for open spaces.

Cllr Aird said there used to be a situation where the green space was at the front of developments so kids could go out and kick a ball.

“These are not traditional green areas,” said Cllr Aird.

“We look at passive as well as active open areas,” said Ms McEvoy.

Cllr Aird said most of the people moving into the properties had children who needed spaces to play.

“I am not happy with it,” he remarked.
