The issue was raised at a recent Council meeting in Portlaoise

Disabled people are being left in the rain due to the lack of bus stops in Durrow, a Laois Councillor has said.

Cllr Ollie Clooney asked in a motion “that this Council provide bus stops at Moran’s Cross on the Abbeyleix Road and at Sean Doire, Durrow.”

In a written response, the Road Design and Active Travel section said: “The Council is liaising with Laois Offaly Local Link regarding the provision of a bus stop outside Sean Doire estate. A submission will be forwarded to the NTA seeking inclusion of this stop on the Bus Stop Enhancement Programme.”

Cllr Clooney said there was a bus stop at the Sean Doire for his entire life. He said there were elderly people out there who needed the bus stop.

“It is a good bit out of town there. There is elderly people living out there,” said Cllr Clooney.

“Also at Moran’s Cross,” he said. “I can’t figure out how this bus is not stopping at these two places,” said Cllr Clooney.

Cllr James Kelly seconded the motion and praised TFI and Local Link who he said had always been accommodating in his experience. He said the problem at Moran’s Cross has to do with road safety as it is a 100kph zone. Cllr Kelly said he fully supported the need for a stop at Sean Doire.

Cllr Clooney said the Sean Doire stop was the most urgent of the two stops. “We can’t pick up disabled people in the rain, that is what is going on,” he said.

He said it was a very serious matter in the local area and people are being let down.

The issue was discussed during the October meeting of Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
