Barrowhouse GAA club set to benefit from 5 k run

Barrowhouse Running Club invites runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities to take part in 5 km run with a Laois farming theme to raise funds for Barrowhouse GAA.

Open to all running abilities, including walkers, the event will be fully chip-timed on what the club promises will be a flat, scenic course through the surrounding countryside.

Barrowhouse Running Club was formed in February 2025 after starting life as a Couch to 5K group that was set up as a fundraiser for the local primary school, Shanganamore NS. Since then, it has grown to almost 40 members.

“A small group of nervous first-timers shuffling around the GAA pitch has evolved into a club whose members are now taking on 10 km, half-marathons, and even full marathons,” say the club. MORE BELOW PHOTO.

Not-for-profit and entirely volunteer-led, the club is, in its own words, “just as much a social group as a running one.” As Barrowhouse GAA Club is where the group formed, the runners have decided that the Harvest Run is their way of giving something back to the GAA and the wider Barrowhouse community.

The organisers are keen to emphasise that the Harvest Run is not just a race for experienced runners.

“If you’ve ever thought running isn’t for you, you’d fit right in with us,” says the club’s event organiser, Nicola Brennan. MORE BELOW PHOTO.

“The event welcomes participants at every level, from those completing their first ever 5km to seasoned road racers, and is designed to be a fun, inclusive evening for everyone,” she adds.

Prizes will be awarded to first male, female, and juvenile finishers, with spot prizes on the night. The event will be supported by chip timing, stewards, and Garda presence along the route.

The Harvest Run will take place on Wednesday, July 29 at 7 pm, starting and finishing at Barrowhouse GAA Clubhouse. Entry is €15 for adults, €10 for under-18s, and €30 for a family ticket (two adults and two children).

Online registration available at https://in.justrunsentries.com/harvest-5k-2026?currentPage=select-competition via @barrowhouseharvestrun on Instagram and Facebook, or in-person on the night.
