Cllr Conor Bergin made the comment at a meeting of Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District

A Councillor who says a section of road improved after it crossed into Tipperary told a meeting that ‘we can’t have Tipp showing us up’.

Cllr Conor Bergin made the comment as he asked for work to be carried out on a road in Ballybrophy.

He tabled a motion asking ‘’that Laois County Council urgently assess and address the serious road safety concerns on the L5511 road at Garran, Ballybrophy to the County boundary including the poor condition of the roadway, and undertake any necessary remedial works and safety improvements to ensure the safety of motorists and local residents.’’

In a written response, the Municipal District office stated that: “The MD will continue to carry out regular road maintenance works on this roadway. The MD Office will consider this roadway for inclusion on the 2027 Road Restoration Improvement Works Programme.”

Cllr Bergin said while it was “primarily a rural road” it was very busy and a number of young families had built houses along the road. He told the meeting that the road was in need of resurfacing.

“The road is half in Tipperary and half in Laois…we can’t have Tipperary showing us up,” he remarked. He urged the Council to carry out work and said the road has gotten very bad.

The motion was seconded by Cllr John King who said he believed it was 50 years since the road had been resurfaced. He said it was a busy bog road and it is in need of repair.

The issue was discussed during the October meeting of Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
