Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy had assured residents the work would be done this year

A councillor who prior to the local elections promised that a road would be resurfaced was upset when his constituents told him it wasn’t on the roads programme for 2024.

Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy said that while he didn’t want to be negative, he was upset that the road was removed from planned works this year.

Senior Executive Engineer Philip McVeigh said the work would be prioritised next year.

“That’s not very fair Philip because I wasn’t told. When we got the extra funding that road was in,” he said.

“I canvassed in the local elections and I told people that that road was going to be done. They were able to come back to me, without me even knowing, to say they had been told by the council it wasn’t being done,” said Cllr McEvoy.

He described the situation as “very unfair” and said at the very least he should have been informed about the decision not to include the road this year.

“I don’t want to know everything that is going on but when it concerns me I think I should at least be told about that,” he remarked.

Cllr McEvoy raised the issue at the latest meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
