A man who was seriously injured in an assault in Portarlington last month remains in a coma, a sitting of Portlaoise District Court was told.
Ian Barnes (41), of 72 Wilderness Grove, Clonmel, Co Tipperary is accused of assault causing harm at Main Street, Portarlington on June 7, 2026.
He appeared before Portlaoise District Court where Garda Sergeant Jason Hughes said the DPP needed more time for directions in the case.
“The injured party is still in a coma,” he told Judge Andrew Cody.
Sgt Hughes suggested an adjournment to October or November for directions in the case.
Addressing the accused, Judge Cody explained that the DPP has not yet decided whether the case should remain in the district court or go to a higher court.
He remanded the man on bail and adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on October 12.
