Laois family business to celebrate 95 years of service

Mulhall’s Supervalu started out as Mulhall’s Meats in Portlaoise in 1931
One of Portlaoise’s best known family businesses is getting ready to celebrate 95 years serving the community of Laois.
Now prominently located in the heart of Portlaoise, Mulhall’s Supervalu in Kellyville, Lyster Square, the Mulhall family business started out as Mulhall’s Meats.
The Mulhall story began in 1931, when the family opened their first butcher shop on Main Street in Portlaoise, supplying quality beef from the family farm in Ballyroan.
From those humble beginnings, the business has grown and evolved through generations, while remaining true to the values on which it was founded: quality food, skilled craftsmanship, personal service and a genuine commitment to the local community.
In 1975, Seamus and Ursula Mulhall continued the family tradition, and in 1983 the business moved to Kellyville, marking an important new chapter.

By 1993, Mulhall’s had expanded beyond the traditional butcher’s counter into a fresh food store, with Mulhall’s Meats remaining at its heart. Today, 95 years after first opening its doors, the family business continues to be a proud part of Portlaoise life.
The anniversary is not just about celebrating the history of Mulhall’s Meats. It is also an opportunity to recognise the generations of customers, staff, local farmers and suppliers who have helped make the business what it is today.
Speaking ahead of the celebrations, Gerard and Seamus Mulhall said: “Reaching 95 years in business is a very special milestone for our family. We are incredibly proud of our history here in Portlaoise and very grateful to the generations of customers who have supported us over the years.
Our customers and our community have always been at the heart of everything we do. We wanted to mark this occasion by giving something back, with fantastic special offers, food tastings, entertainment and a few surprises along the way.
We would love to see as many people as possible join us in-store over the three days to celebrate this milestone together. From our family and all our team, thank you for 95 wonderful years.”
While he was kept busy at the family farm in Ballyroan, some of Gerard’s earliest memories are of Quinsworth supermarket and Penney’s being beside the shop and customers used to wheel their trollies over to get their meat. The special offers would be posted on a mechanical chopping Butcher Boy figure outside the store, he recalled.
Gerard said “Joe Laffan started the bundle deals” in the shop which are common now at stores across the country but were new at the time.
Everyone is invited to come along, enjoy the celebrations as Mulhall’s mark the occasion with some unmissable offers.
To celebrate almost a century of quality, tradition and loyal customer support, Mulhall’s SuperValu Portlaoise is inviting the community to join in three days of special anniversary celebrations from Thursday, November 12 to Saturday, November 14.
And what better way to say thank you than with some fantastic anniversary offers, Including: 33% off sirloin steak and half price salmon. Customers can also look forward to a lively atmosphere in-store throughout the celebrations, with food tastings from local suppliers, family fun and entertainment, giveaways and prizes.
