Laois footpath prevents wheelchair user crossing road

A footpath in Laois missing a vital feature is preventing a wheelchair user from crossing the road at a junction.
The issue of the faulty footpath at the front of a housing estate in Doonane has been highlighted at a council meeting.
It is missing a dropped kerb, forcing a local person who uses a wheelchair to travel down into a housing estate until they can cross at another kerb.
Cllr Ben Brennan is asking Laois County Council to sort it.
He tabled a motion to the March meeting of the Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District, to drop the kerb on the path down to Doonane Church near Crettyard.
"There is a man in a wheelchair there. If he gets in on the footpath he can't get off until he goes halfway down a housing estate then back up. They never dropped the kerb. It is done on the other side," Cllr Brennan explained.
The council has agreed to carry out the work.
