O'Dempsey's secured over €72k in LEADER funding through Connect Laois towards the development

Work has commenced on a new community walking track at O'Dempsey's GFC in Killenard, with the project expected to be completed by mid-December.

The development will see a new pathway constructed around the club's main pitch, along with associated ground works and spectator fencing around two sides of the playing surface. The existing wooden fencing behind the goals and along the bank side will also be replaced as part of the project. New pathways will also connect the existing footpath to the walking track and the club's Wall Ball Astro, creating a continuous walkway throughout the grounds.

O'Dempsey's successfully secured €72,356.25 in LEADER grant funding earlier this year towards the cost of the development through Connect Laois. The grant application was led by Hazel McCormack and Jason Redmond, who were thanked by the club for their work and commitment in securing the funding.

The remaining costs will be covered through club funds, including money raised through the K26 community fundraising initiative. K26 is a joint fundraising initiative between Killenard Community Centre and O'Dempsey's GFC, which has raised more than €250,000. The organisations recently held their K26 Film Awards as part of the initiative, with money raised helping to fund the remaining costs of the walking track development.

Once completed, the new pitch loop will link with the existing footpath from the clubhouse to provide an off-road walking facility for club members and the wider Killenard community. The facility is intended to provide an accessible space for people to exercise and enjoy the club grounds, including parents and family members waiting for children at training.

The main pitch and surrounding area will remain out of bounds to members and users of the grounds for the duration of the construction works, with the club asking everyone to respect the restrictions until the project is completed.
