A private gym in Laois has managed to raise a whopping €1,800 for the local Meals on Wheels, which brings hot dinners to the doorsteps of the elderly and housebound.

Tommy Delaney Fitness is based in the Bay Road Business Park in Mountmellick.

Owner Tommy and trainer Karl Carthy recently handed over the big cheque to the local Meals on Wheels group, represented by volunteers Anne Blanche and Claire Conroy.

Tommy told the Leinster Express / Laois Live how they raised the big sum.

"We had 26 members who took part. They trained for a 5k run at home but we also got together every Wednesday at Emo gardens for a group running session with our gym running coach Karl.placeholder image

"At the end of our 8 weeks of training for this, we had our final 5k run on week 9 which everyone completed.

"I picked Meals on Wheels because it is a local charity in Mountmellick and the work they do is amazing in our town. l think of elderly people being on their own and just having someone delivering a meal and having a social interaction with them can be a game changer to someone's life.

"It is nice to give back to a local charity in Mountmellick in what way my business can and be that small piece of someones heart in our community," Tommy said.
