Laois households using potentially poisonous lead water pipes can get up to €5,000 to pay to replace them, regardless of how much income is earned.

A restriction on income has been removed, for the Domestic Lead Remediation Grant Scheme, Laois County Council has announced.

The grant scheme has been up and running since 2016 but it had been means tested up to the end of 2022.

It is available to both public and private water supplies and no money needs to be spent by the household.

"The grant provides 100% financial assistance (max of €5,000) to eligible applicants to replace lead piping and fittings in a house, that is occupied as the applicant's normal place of residence. Applications can be made through the local authority," the council state.
