Laois runners in the dark at enterprise park

Portlaoise runners and walkers are being kept in the dark in the National Enterprise Park, a Laois councillor has complained.
Cllr Thomasina Connell has called on Portlaoise Municipal District office to immediately fix streetlights at the area near the roundabout and entrance to Crossfit / UnLaoised, in a motion tabled to the February meeting.
"It is causing a serious risk to runners and walkers as the pathway is in complete darkness and it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to use this fantastic amenity," she said.
“Anyone who runs in Portlaoise has used this path from Clonminam to the new park. So many have contacted me. The council is aware of this since November. Why can't we fix it ourselves? It's really annoying people,” she said.
It's a bigger issue according to the Director of Services Simon Walton.
“30 or 40 lights are affected. They were provided in a private development in 2008. It's not an issue of repair, but of connection to the ESB network. I signed an order 10 days ago so works will be undertaken.
“That includes lights on the central access road,” he said.
He added that as the council has taken the road in charge, more upgrades will follow this year.
