Laois school bids farewell trailblazing SNA

Portlaoise College has bid a fond farewell to SNA pioneer Catherine Bergin as she retires after more than 19 years with the school. Catherine was described by Principal Noel Daly as a “true trailblazer” in special educational needs and a dedicated advocate for generations of students.
“It’s not easy to say goodbye to a colleague who has given over 19 years of their life to our school and who has made a meaningful difference to the lives of our students,” said Noel. Catherine was part of the first wave of SNAs and has spent almost 50 years in the workforce, having previously worked in the Montague Hotel and Tritron. Noel praised the difference Catherine made to students through “a reassuring word, a helping hand and a patient explanation”. He also joked about her love of sport and dedication to helping students with practical subjects.

“I’m sure if it was measured you would hold the world record for the most completed Junior Cert woodwork and engineering projects – I meant to say helped students to complete,” he joked. He described Catherine as a wonderful colleague who had become “part of the fabric” of Portlaoise College. The staff room was packed as colleagues gathered to say goodbye, with Deputy Principal Patricia Cullen presenting Catherine with flowers and a hand-painted picture of the school by Art teacher Clodagh Dunne.
There was an emotional final farewell as Catherine left the school, with students forming a guard of honour to mark her retirement and thank her for the support she had given them over the years.

Noel wished Catherine every happiness in retirement, with plenty of time for family, relaxation and travel. “Thanks from all in Portlaoise College, and I can take this opportunity to wish you the best of health and happiness,” he said.
