Laois solicitor unable to make submissions for burglary accused

The man is accused of burglary and damaging a garda station
A solicitor was unable to make submissions on behalf of a man who is accused of burglary and smashing garda station windows.
Hugh Nevin (28), of 7 Oak Park, Portlaoise is accused of burgling a house at Wolfe Tone Street, Mountmellick, stealing a hammer valued at €50, possession of an orange and black coloured hammer, trespass and criminal damage to Mountmellick Garda Station on April 24, 2026. It is alleged the man smashed three windows, including the glass pane of the front door of the station.
Solicitor Philip Meagher said he was unable to make representations due to the legal aid dispute.
“The situation is not of our making. We all want to represent our clients,” said Mr Meagher.
“I am not in a position to assist the court,” he added.
Judge Andrew Cody said an issue had been raised in relation to the case but “I don’t know what it is”.
He noted the DPP had directed that it was for summary disposal in the district court. He accepted jurisdiction.
Judge Cody adjourned the matter to Portlaoise District Court on October 12 for either a plea of guilty or a date for hearing.
