Laois County Council one of just four in the country to get safety engeneer

A new engineer is set to be appointed in Laois County Council to help come out with safety solutions for dangerous roads in the county.

Confirmation of the approval of the post was revealed to councillors at a meeting with officials in County Hall Portlaoise.

Paul McLoughlin, Senior Engineer, said Laois County Council is one of just four local authorities included in a pilot programme whereby a staff engineer would work full-time and exclusively on road safety projects.

Mr McLoughlin told the Leinster Express that the appointment would be in addition to the existing complement of engineer staff in County Hall. The engineer is expected to take up the role in the coming months.

He told the Leinster Express that the initiative is backed by the Department of Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

County councillors welcomed the announcement at the Graiguecullen Portarlington Municipal District meeting.
