Cllr Barry Walsh tabled a motion to the May meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking the council to both widen and repair the footpath.

“It's quite bumpy so even if a wheelchair was able to get on it,it would get stuck,” he said.

“This was highlighted to me by a few disabled groups, includingthe Wheelchair Association of Ireland.

“It's a narrow path, it's neither a path nor a kerb, it's not wide enough,” Cllr Walsh said.

Cllr Willie Aird seconded the motion.

“Anything to make the town more disability friendly,” he said.

The area engineer will now examine the footpath.
