The Laois Traveller community is holding a special event in Portarlington to celebrate national Traveller Pride Week.

Laois Traveller Action Group (LTAG) will host a Traveller Pride event at Portarlington Community Hub this Wednesday, July 12.

All members of the Laois community are welcome to come and see the Travelling Community celebrate ‘Traveller Change Makers in Laois’.

They will have a photo display of the Travelling Community throughout generations, a display of Traveller Change Makers  and a display of old campfires and tents used in the travelling community.

There will also be live music by Young Travellers and Laois Music Generation.

Annette Long is Project Manager at LTAG.

‘Traveller Pride week is about coming together and acknowledging and embracing Traveller heritage with pride, exploring our natural creativity to connect with one another, and sharing our cultural experiences through the joy that creativity brings.  We will celebrate ‘Traveller Change Makers in Co. Laois’. We look forward to welcoming all members of the Laois Community to our event this Wednesday,’ she said.

All are welcomed to come and join Laois Traveller Action Group on Wednesday, July 12 from 1pm until 3pm at the Community Hub, Ballymorris Road, Portlarlington, (R32R660) for a celebration of culture, music and traditions.

The town's former cinema was a film location for Into The West, a movie about Traveller children, now celebrated with a mural by ADW.
