The man appeared before Portlaoise District Court

A man pleaded guilty to unlawfully taking a car, driving while uninsured and leaving the scene of a hit and run.

Michael Kevin Mulhall (29) of 4 Moanbaun Close, Mountrath, admitted the offences at a sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

He is accused of the unlawful taking of a car at his address, drink driving, having no insurance or licence and two counts of hit and run at Rushin Road, Mountrath on May 6, 2026.

Brian Mallon BL said his client was pleading guilty to the offences. He noted that a victim impact statement was expected in the case and he said he didn’t want to offer any plea of mitigation prior to the introduction of the statement.

Mr Mallon told Judge Edward Carroll that it wasn’t a legal aid case as many of those had been adjourned due to an ongoing dispute over the planned introduction of new legal aid fees.

Judge Carroll said he would note the guilty plea and adjourn the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on July 2.
