He appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court where a judge warned he could get six months in prison

A man appeared in court accused of stealing a Capri Sun and bottle of water.

Wayne O’Donoghue (24) of 7 Old Knockmay Road, Portlaoise pleaded guilty to stealing the items which were valued at €4.60 from Portlaoise Plaza on March 22, 2026.

Garda Sergeant Mark Daly said the accused had gone into the shop and picked up a €2.60 bottle of water and €2 Capri Sun and left the shop.

“He refused to pay when he was accosted,” said Sgt Daly. He said the man had 33 previous convictions.

“He is looking at six months now for his water and Capri Sun,” said Judge Andrew Cody.

Andrew Dunne BL said the court would be familiar with his client.  “Too familiar,” replied Judge Cody.

Mr Dunne said his client was engaging with probation services, was abiding by his bail conditions and was due to start community service.

Judge Cody wanted to know if the man had come to Garda attention since the offence in March. Sgt Daly said he didn’t believe so.

Judge Cody described the man as a “nuisance” and said he would strike the matter out if the defendant donated €50 to St Vincent de Paul.  He adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on May 14.
