Man appears before Portlaoise District Court

A man has appeared before Portlaoise District Court accused of speeding.

Johnathan Sutton (33) of Main Street, Monegall, Birr Co. Offaly appeared before Judge Edward Carroll, accused of driving at a speed of 93kmph at Castle Durrow Demesne, Durrow.

Gardaí told the court that the accused was issued a fixed charge penalty notice.

“He was fully cooperative with gardaí,” defending solicitor Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick told the court.

“It is quite a wide road. It was very high for the limit, he is in trouble on penalties,” she said.

Ms Fitzpatrick explained that the accused had three penalty points removed on September 4, and that he was not disqualified. The accused had a reference in court from his employer.

“He got three penalty points in September of 2023, and has no previous convictions, he was fully cooperative and is supported today by a colleague,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

She explained that the defendant drives up to 50,000 kilometres each year for work, and highlighted that he needs to be more careful.

Judge Carroll scheduled another hearing on September 10.
