Parking ban on the way at busy Laois creche in Portlaoise housing estate

No parking at any time to be enforced outside busy Laois creche
Parking will soon be illegal 24 hours a day, on the road outside a busy Portlaoise creche.
Double yellow lines are to be painted on the road outside Magic Moments Creche in Hawthorne Drive housing estate.
It has been requested for safety reasons for children attending the creche.
Cllr Paddy Buggy brought a motion asking for the lines, on the road around the corner site, and across the street too.
“Health and safety is always crucial and especially where you have children in built up places like housing estates. It will greatly safeguard children going to and from Magic Moments Creche. Possibly we will have to do it for all our creches around the town. Thank you, I’m looking forward to this being implemented as soon as possible,” he said.
His request was in a motion tabled to the June meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District. It also successfully requested the word “slow” to be painted on the road either side of the creche.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Tommy Mulligan.
“Just from speaking to the residents up there, there are a few concerns because cars are coming at that corner, it’s a pinch point. They are parking there and it’s affecting all other cars moving between Hawthorne Drive, and unfortunately some are driving at speed as well.
“Delighted to hear the yellow lines are going in, it is a serious health and safety issue,” he said.
Cllr Barry Walsh said he was contacted about the issue too, and supports the motion.
Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley however stressed that it means the end of parking for residents too.
“I support the motion, and all I would ask is that the residents in the area are made aware of the double yellow lines. Absolutely we have to keep children safe, but when the lines go down, they are down permanently and it means no-one can park there including people living in the area. I do support the whole safety aspect of it and I’m sure you have already spoken with the residents,” she said.
Cllr Buggy confirmed that “all the residents have been spoken to in the affected area”.
“They all welcome the fact the slow signs and the double yellow lines. They saw the need for it,” he said.
