Laois County Council granted permission subject to six planning conditions

Portarlington Rugby Club has been granted planning permission to install six new floodlight columns on the club's second pitch at Lea, Portarlington.

The development, approved by Laois County Council subject to six conditions, will see the construction of six 18.3-metre-high lamp standards and light fittings, along with associated site works at the club grounds. The application was submitted by Darragh Brereton, Secretary of Portarlington RFC.

The approval marks the latest investment in the club's facilities, following Portarlington RFC's official opening of new LED floodlights and a walking track at its first pitch in January 2026. READ MORE BELOW PICTURE.

Among the conditions attached to the permission, the council stated that the floodlights must be directed onto the playing surface and cowled away from neighbouring homes and the public road. The lighting must also comply with recognised standards aimed at reducing light pollution, with confirmation from a suitably qualified professional required before the lights come into use.

The council has also restricted the operating hours of the floodlights to between 9am and 10pm daily. Dazzle guards, hoods and louvres must be installed to prevent glare or light spill onto nearby properties and roads.

Other conditions require the club to consult with ESB regarding any overhead power lines before work begins and to adhere to environmental best practice guidelines during construction. The club must also ensure that no construction material is deposited on public roads and that surrounding areas are kept clean and safe throughout the works.

No advertising signage may be erected on the floodlight columns without obtaining separate planning permission.

The development is expected to further enhance the club's training and playing facilities as rugby continues to grow in the Portarlington area.
