Portlaoise rail depot hailed as key anchor employer

Portlaoise’s Rail and Sleeper Depot has been hailed as a key anchor employer for Co Laois.
Minister of State Sean Fleming said he was very pleased to attend a major infrastructure showcase organised by Iarnrod Eireann/Irish Rail at the Rail and Sleeper Depot in Portlaoise recently.
He said generations of local people have worked in the sleeper plant and it is a key anchor employer in Co Laois.

He noted Portlaoise is a central location for rail infrastructure in Ireland and there are many local businesses that supply products and services to Irish Rail.
“All the materials together with some of the heavy equipment that they use for installing new railway tracks and sleepers and for levelling the ground under the track and compacting it, all with high tech mechanical equipment, was on display,” he explained.

“Some of this equipment is supplied by European manufacturers in countries where they have a much greater rail network. I was pleased to hear that some of the local staff were being trained to operate such equipment so that we will not be as reliant on people coming in on a temporary basis to operate here in the future,” said Minister Fleming.

“Overall everybody in Ireland can clearly benefit from much improved and greater rail facilities and a reduced level of motor vehicles on our road network which is better for our environment.Everybody is a winner including the public, the employees, the environment and Iarnrod Eireann/Irish Rail,” Minister Fleming concluded.
