Laois Council considering options on busy Mountmellick road

A new speed radar is among the measures being considered to slow traffic at a creche in Mountmellick.

So Cllr Paddy Bracken, Fianna Fáil, was told when he tabled a motion at a recent meeting in County Hall in Portlaoise. He called on Laois County Council to install traffic calming measures on the R422 at Townsparks.

“This is an urgent call that I am making because there is a very busy pre-school there,” he said.

He told officials and fellow councillors that the 60 km speed limit is ignored.

“The traffic is not obeying any speed signs so it certainly needs signs and markings and street lights,” he said.

Cllr Bracken said parents have lobbied him to do something before an accident happens.

James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer in the council’s Roads section, replied.

“Laois County Council will investigate the possibility of the installation of a speed radar sign and additional road markings at Townsparks, Mountmellick,” he said.

The issue was raised at a meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
