Portlaoise Municipal district councillors have declared what they say are the worst and second worst roads in their area of Laois.

Possibly the worst road in Laois leads from Ironmills, Ballinakill to the Laois county border, according to Cllr John Joe Fennelly.

He tabled a motion to the January 2024 district meeting asking for it to be put on the 2024 roads programme of Laois County Council.

“Once you examine it you will see it's one of the worst standards of roads in the area. I look forward to it being on the roads programme,” he said.

His motion was seconded by Cllr Barry Walsh.

The “second worst”, according to Cllr Willie Aird is Knockbaun Lower near Abbeyleix, beside a picnic spot.

“This is certainly the second worst. It's in an awful state. If you could do something for the people in that area,” Cllr Aird asked.

The Portlaoise roads office will now examine both the L-1738 at Ironmills to see if it needs to be resurfaced in 2024, and the Knockbaun road to consider it for road repairs.
