A Safe Access Zone is due to be established at the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise

The move follows the commencement of abortions at the hospital in December last year.

In a response to a query in relation to the introduction of a Safe Access Zone at Portlaoise Hospital, the HSE told the Leinster Express/ Laois Live that: “The Health (Termination of Pregnancy Services) (Safe Access Zones) Bill 2023 was signed by the President on the 7 May 2024. The Department of Health is currently engaging with relevant stakeholders in relation to the commencement of the legislation.

Once the Act has been commenced, it will create Safe Access Zones of 100 metres from an entrance or exit to a premises where obstetricians/gynaecologists and general practitioners provide services. The Zones will also apply to hospitals that provide acute inpatient services within the meaning of Section 51 of the Health Act 1970.”

Protesting or other behaviour within the zone could result in a prosecution in the district court under the Safe Access Zone Act.

HSE Clinical Lead for Termination Services,  Dr Aoife Mullally,  welcomed the introduction of abortions at the hospital last December.

At the time, she said, “this will enable women to access care in their local units without the additional burden of travel. I acknowledge the leadership of the Clinical Lead Consultants in all maternity units who have worked extremely hard to develop these services and provide high-quality, compassionate care for women.

While the majority of early pregnancy abortion care is provided in the community, a hospital-based service is essential for some women and is a valuable support for the community-based service,” she said.
