Speed ramps and lights needed at Laois primary school

This is the second time in recent weeks that speed ramps near a Laois school were raised
Speed ramps are needed at another primary school in a Laois village.
Laois County Council has been requested to install speed ramps and lights at Derrylamogue National School.
Speaking at the September meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory / Mountmellick MD, Cllr Seamus McDonald urged that the safety measures be put in place at the primary school which he said is located on a bad bend.
The Council said the provision of a comprehensive road safety assessment and the provision of traffic-calming measures at Derrymalogue National School is currently unfunded within the existing MD budget.
However, the school is located within a designated CLÁR area so is eligible for small-scale rural infrastructure grants.
The CLÁR programme is a targeted investment programme for rural areas which aims to provide funding for small infrastructural projects.
The MD Office will include the school for a funding application under Measure 1 (Developing Community Facilities & Amenities) of the 2027 CLÁR funding cycle.
The MD Office also plans on liaising with the Roads Department to prepare a traffic calming design for the application.
Cllr McDonald welcomed the news and implored the Council to follow through with the application to “make the area safer.”
This is the second school in Laois which has been brought to the attention of Laois County Council in recent weeks for the installation of speed ramps.
At this week’s meeting of the Graiguecullen / Portarlington MD, Cllr Aisling Moran renewed her pleas for a pedestrian crossing and speed ramps at Arles National School.
