A €100 fine was handed out to a man who stole alcohol from a shop in Laois.

Peter Cica, 33, of Ballybrophy, Laois admitted stealing alcohol valued at €50.85 cent from Supervalu in Rathdowney on September 14 last year.

Sgt JJ Kirby said the man has six previous convictions.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client was with another man on the day and had thought the other man paid for the drink.

She said he had since apologised to the shopkeeper and is now allowed back into the store.

Judge Andrew Cody fined the man €100 and gave him six months to pay.
