Survey confirms drivers speeding through Laois village

A traffic survey in a Laois village has confirmed what locals are reporting, that speeding is a problem.
Laois County Council recently carried out a traffic count and speed survey on the two approach roads into Killeen village.
They found "high traffic speeds" on both sides of the village on the regional R429 road.
On the road in from Ballickmoyler where the speed limit is 50km/hr, traffic was recorded driving at 80km/hr.
On the road from Maganey into Killeen, where the limit is 80km/hr, drivers were speeding at 100km/hr.
Cllr Aisling Moran is requesting that the village now get speed table ramps to slow the traffic down.
She tabled a motion to the November meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District to request ramps, asking what speeds were recorded.
"This survey is important, it's what we need. Traffic doesn't slow down, it goes straight through at 100. It's a dead straight road. We need to slow it right down," she said.
In reply, area engineer Philip McVeigh said that the road will now be checked to choose possible locations for speed tables.
