Traffic is regularly meeting on a narrow bridge with a stop sign on only one side, a council meeting was told.

Independent Cllr James Kelly asked the council to look at the signage near the bridge in Camross.

He tabled a motion stating “that Laois County Council provide stop signs and road markings on the approach roads  to the narrow bridge at Camross village and replace the road direction sign at Marymount Cross Camross.”

Cllr Kelly said “it is the narrow bridge there at Camross and there has been a lot of issues there. There is just one stop sign… there’s no stop sign on the other side.”

“One gentleman who drives a bus there and he has often been in the middle of the bridge and someone is coming towards him and then everybody has to back off,” Cllr Kelly told the meeting.

“It is a very busy village. The school is there, the creche, the pub, the community hub, the new park is there and I know that we are also waiting on the pedestrian bridge,” he said.

He claimed the existing bridge that is there is “rickety” and some people preferred to walk on the road.

In response,  Senior Executive Engineer, Edmund Kenny said: “The area office will review the current safety provisions at these junctions and will supplement existing signage and markings as deemed necessary."

“I know Edmund that you said that the new pedestrian bridge would be in in the next couple of months, so we are all looking forward to that,” said Cllr Kelly.

Fianna Fail Cllr Seamus McDonald said he also supported the motion.
