Trees growing under graves, Laois meeting told

Laois County Council won’t take action over roots growing under graves as they haven’t taken a cemetery in charge.
Fianna Fail Councillor Paschal McEvoy asked the council to deal with overgrown trees in Stradbally at a recent meeting.
He put down a motion asking “that this Council trim back the trees in the old cemetery Stradbally.”
In a written response, Ken Morley, S.E., Corporate and Community said: “The old cemetery in Stradbally is not one of the cemeteries under the control and management of Laois County Council. Only the new cemetery is managed by and registered to the Council.”
Cllr McEvoy said he would have to find another way to get the work done.
“These are the trees growing in along the wall and growing in under the graves. I will talk to the graveyard committee and see can we get some kind of funding,” said Cllr McEvoy
Sinn Fein Cllr Aidan Mullins said he was aware of developments in relation to graveyards in Laois.
“I am told there is a review being carried out of all the graveyards that are not taken in charge. Can we get an update on where that review is at whenever the information is available?" asked Cllr Mullins.
He made the comments at the latest meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
